Hopfer Evening/Saturday Program

The four 16-week semesters in the Evening/Saturday Program offers the student with daytime commitments an opportunity to pursue their education with convenient evening classes.

The Evening/Weekend Program is a 2-3 day per week evening commitment.  Classes generally begin at 6:00 p.m. with a Saturday mandatory clinical requirement from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students may be required to attend a weekday clinical experience 2-3 times each semester (advance notice will be provided).

Program starts annually in January (Spring semester).  Application deadline for January 2011 admission is September 8, 2010.

REQUIREMENTS

For acceptance as a student, the applicant must demonstrate:

  • Proof of graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency (GED);
  • Successful completion (C or better) of one year high school Chemistry with lab or one semester college Chemistry with lab (must be a non-remedial course, 4 credits);
  • Official college transcripts must demonstrate a  cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or better (HSON will internally calculate the GPA) for allof the completed courses indicated as follows.  A minimum grade of C+ or better is required (effective for students entering Spring 2011 and thereafter),

7 courses (24 credits) required for admission to the Evening/Saturday Program

Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab - 4 credits

Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab - 4 credits

Microbiology with Lab - 4 credits

Nutrition - 3 credits

General Psychology - 3 credits

Introduction to Sociology - 3 credits

English 101 - 3 credits

Pharmacology & Bioethics  (can be taken while in program) - 6 credits      

  • Submission of all official transcripts from schools previously attended
  • Personal integrity and potential for nursing as documented by one reference from teacher, faculty advisor, employer or member of the clergy, and
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency a.k.a."Green Card"

Applicants educated in a foreign country will need to have their high school and college international transcripts validated by a recognized agency such as the World Education Services.  Students who possess a Bachelor’s Degree may have their high school transcript waived.  Contact the Admission-Recruiter for further details.

Applicants who have been dismissed for academic or disciplinary cause from the Hopfer School of Nursing or other RN program are ineligible to apply (effective Fall 2008).

ENTRANCE EXAM 

Applicants for the Spring 2011 Evening/Saturday Program and thereafter will be invited to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Version 5 (Reading, Mathematics, Science and English & Language Usage).

All applicants are required to submit all prior TEAS test results.  Only Version 5 of the TEAS will be considered for admission. 

Evening/Saturday Program applicants who have taken the TEAS - Version 5 more than twice from July 31st of last year through August 1st of the current year only the 1st and 2nd exams will be considered.

An invitation for retake will be offered at the discretion of the Admissions Committee based on space availability.

TRANSFER CREDIT

A course for which transfer is requested must be:

  • Supported by an official transcript
  • A comparable course with a grade of C+ (2.5) or have sufficient content within the required discipline to justify “transfer by credit”, and
  • Validated by a recognized agency such as World Education Services if taken in another country.

Credits by Examination

Hopfer will accept up to 9 credits earned through selected challenge examinations offered by CLEP (College Level Examination Program) and Excelsior College. Inability to achieve a satisfactory grade on the first attempt to challenge will require the student to enroll in the course. The following is the list of examinations exceptable for transfer:  

CLEP Exam -Must achieve a passing grade of 50 or higher

Introductory Psychology, Introductory Sociology and English Composition with Essay.

Evaluation of Transfer Credit

Prior to acceptance to the School of Nursing:

  • The Admission-Recruiter reviews official transcripts for acceptable transfer credits.
  • The applicant is informed of the courses that will be credited from outside institutions.
  • The applicant is given the option to agree or disagree with the Admission-Recruiter's decision.
  • If the candidate agrees, the transfer courses are entered on the Official Notification of Transfer Credit form.
  • If the candidate disagrees and believes more course work should be credited, it is the candidate's responsibility to supply a course description for the description for the credits in dispute.
  • The Admission Committee will review the course description.
  • The candidate receives written notification of the decision by the Office of Admissions.

Science courses (Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Nutrition and Pharmacology) must be taken within 10 years of admission.  Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology taken more than ten years ago may be challenged by examination (Excelsior College). Students must have achieved a grade of C+ or better to be eligible to take a challenge exam.  Inability to achieve a satisfactory grade on the first attempt to challenge will require the student to enroll in the course.

Humanities courses (English 101, General Psychology and Intro to Sociology) will not be accepted for transfer credit if they were taken more than 20 years ago. Courses taken more than twenty years ago (grade C+ or better) may be challenged by examination (CLEP). Exception would be those applicants with a Baccalaureate degree.
